Karnatak University (KUD) is popularly known as Dharwad University, that was established by the Bombay Legislature of the Bombay Presidency (old) through Karnatak University Act 1949. On March 1st, 1950, Karnatak University became a statutory university, covering Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and other districts of the Uttara Kannada region.
The university is accredited with Grade ‘A’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). KUD, Dharwad is approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC). KUD, Dharwad has several Postgraduate centres under its aegis. It offers courses in the faculty of Arts, Commerce, Education, Law, Management, Social Science, Science and Technology.
There are 47 Postgraduate Departments with 224 teachers and 4500 students. Under its aegis, KUD, Dharwad has Five constituent colleges offering UG and PG courses under multiple streams. The university has seats reserved for special category candidates with the state government policy to eliminate social exclusion and promote social justice. One seat is reserved for children of Ex-Servicemen, Freedom Fighters, Physically Challenged, and Sportsperson.

The Karnatak University library is also known as the Prof. S.S. Basavanal Library. It was established in 1950 during the establishment of the KUD, Dharwad. But its resources were made available to the readers from October 1951. Since 1981, the library has had its own independent building with lush green surroundings. In the year 1994, it was named Prof. S.S. Basavanal Library, one of the founding members of the University.
The library has around 4 lakh books and also has seating facilities for more than 300 students. The library is open 24/7 with all the modern and rich facilities. It strives to provide an effective service to the users to promote higher learning and research.
The University Health Centre is in the KUD, Dharwad premises. The health centre is established to benefit the students, staff, and their dependents. It is facilitated with modern facilities such as computerized ECG Machines, Electronic Blood-Sugar, Blood-Cholesterol, Urine Analysis Machines, etc.
Dharwad University Sports section was established in 1970. The Kreeda Bhavana (sports department) trains the students both academically and in their desired sports. The department provides training in various sports - Basketball, Tennis (Two Courts), Volleyball, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Badminton, Standard Running Track (400-Metre), and other training facilities.
The Computer Centre at Karnatak University, Dharwad was established in 2007 to provide computer knowledge for the students. It also supports the candidates through training them in multiple software applications.
