Unani is an alternative system of medicine that has had a long history in India. It was launched around the 11th century by the Arabs and Persians. Just like Ayurveda and Homeopathy, this system of medicine too uses natural sources like plants, herbs, metals, and minerals to cure a disease.
Unani medicine system originated in Greece and hence the name Unani, which in Arabic/Urdu/Hindi means Greece. The medicine system originated in ancient Greece during the time of Greek philosopher Hippocrates, after whom physicians globally take an ethical oath called Hippocratic Oath. Over the years Unani medicine system has evolved to include the best of traditional medicine systems of Syria, Egypt, Iraq, Persia (modern-day Iran), India, China, and other countries in the Middle Eastern region.
According to the Government of India, the highest practitioners and users of Unani medicine system are in India.
The basic degree in Unani is called Kamil-e-Tibb Wa Jarahat (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS)).
The post graduate degrees are divided into 14 specialties called Mahir-e-Tib (MD Unani) and Mahir-e-Jarahat (MS Unani). After gaining a postgraduate degree, you can get involved in with teaching, researching, and management.
The undergraduate degree in--Kamil-e-Tibb Wa Jarahat (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS))-- is for 5.5 years. This includes 4.5 years of academic preparation in a classroom and one year of compulsory internship.
In order to be eligible for a BUMS admission, one must have passed 12th standard or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Urdu/Arabic/Perian with 50% marks for general category students and 40% for reserved category students. Students must have completed 17 years on or before December 31 of the year of admission.
After completing your 12th standard, you’ll have to attempt the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), the only entrance test for admission to Unani courses in Bangalore.
After successfully completing BUMS, one is eligible to do further specialisation such as Mahir-e-Tib (MD Unani) and Mahir-e-Jarahat (MS Unani), which are for three years. All admissions to MD/MS programmes are based on the marks scored in AIAPGET- 2023. You can choose to specialise in one or more of 14 specialisations available in India.
This three-year postgraduate programme describes deals with basic Unani principles of the human body: Arkan (Basic Elements), Akhlat (Humour), Mizaj (Temperament), Aaza (Organs), Quwa (Faculties), Arwah (Soul), and Afaal (Function).
Doctor of Medicine in Ilmul Advia (Pharmacology) is a three-year clinical specialty that includes the evaluation of drugs and their identification, cultivation, collection, storage and use.
Doctor of Medicine in Ilmus Saidla is the Unani equivalent of pharmacy of modern-day medicine. This three-year postgraduate programme is concerned with the manufacturing and standardisation of medicines using raw materials.
Doctor of Medicine in Tahaffuzi-wa-Samaji-Tib is a three-year postgraduate programme that is aimed at preparing public health professionals that can promote healthy living across the population through research, education, and training.
Doctor of Medicine in Ilmul Atfal is a three-year postgraduate It’s the three-year postgraduate programme equivalent to MD Paediatric of modern medicine. This programme mainly deals with paediatric medical practice.
Doctor of Medicine in Moalajat is a three-year postgraduate programme that mainly focuses on the understanding of the health and diseases of the human body as mentioned in Unani texts. It also deals with treating diseases and ailments with Unani medicine.
Doctor of Medicine in Ilmul Amraz is a three-year postgraduate programme that deals with diagnosing diseases by using classical and modern equipment. It also deals with treating diseases and ailments with Unani medicines.
Doctor of Medicine in Ilaj Bit Tadbeer is a three-year non-clinical postgraduate programme that deals with using special methods or physical methods of treatment to improve and change the patient’s habitat, dietary habits, and lifestyle.
Master of Surgery in Amraz-e-Jild-o-Zohrawaiya is a three-year postgraduate clinical programme that deals with treating skin disorders and diseases using Unani medicines.
Doctor of Medicine in Tashreeh-ul-Badan is the Unani equivalent of Anatomy in modern medicine. This three-year postgraduate clinical programme teaches about human anatomy.
Master of Surgery in Ilmul Jarahat is a clinical three-year postgraduate programme that deals with identifying the diseases at the primary level and performing minor surgical procedures based on Unani principles if needed.
Master of Surgery in Amraze-e-Uzn, Anaf-wa-Halaq is a three-year specialist postgraduate programme that is equivalent to ENT. This programme deals in the study of diagnosing and treating diseases related to eye, ear, nose, and throat, based on Unani principles.
Master of Surgery in Ilmul Qabalat-wa-Amraz-e-Niswan is to Unani what Obstetrics and Gynaecology are to modern medicine. This programme teaches minor OBG procedures, normal childbirth and delivery, infertility management as well as antenatal and postnatal care.
