Overview

The definition says that biology is the natural science that studies life and living organisms, with the other life sciences being its sub-disciplines. Now, this sub-discipline studies subjects like Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Microbiology, etc. Life science as a subject becomes important in order to know ourselves, and how our brain functions.

Many colleges and universities offer courses for Life Science where one can decide to either choose an Undergraduate program or a Postgraduate program. It is this discipline that involves each and every living organism on earth and their components like, cells, enzymes, proteins, neurotransmitters, genes, etc.

Biology is often referred to as Life Sciences. It has three major branches of study, namely, zoology, botany and microbiology. There are two ways to pursue courses in these fields of study. Let us understand in detail.

UG Courses:
Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Biotechnology

Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology is a 3-year undergraduate program that refers to the study of living organisms and bioprocesses in engineering, technology, medicine and other fields requiring by-products. It is a field of applied biology and specifically comes under Biotechnology course.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Microbiology

Bachelor of Science in Microbiology is an undergraduate program which is studied for 3 years. It is the study of microorganisms. Organisms which are microscopic, unicellular and cell-cluster, are all that this subject encompasses. It includes subjects like Bacteriology, Mycology, Biochemistry, Parasitology, etc.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Genetics

Bachelor of Science in Genetics is a 3-year undergraduate program that studies the science of heredity. It also studies the fluctuations and variations in living organisms which again is related to the traits that have been passed on from one generation to the other.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Biochemistry

Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry is the area of science that studies the chemical processes taking place within a living organism. It is a 3-year undergraduate program where the minutest characteristics of the organisms and their biological processes are taught.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Bioinformatics

Bachelor of Science in Bioinformatics is an undergraduate program that comes under the Bioinformatics course. This course is pursued for 3 years. It is that field of science where the application of statistics and computer science is used in the field of molecular biology.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Forensic Medicine

Bachelor of Science in Forensic Medicine is the field of science that uses the application of scientific knowledge for the investigation of crimes. It is a 3-year undergraduate program where students are taught to apply their scientific knowledge with the help of the evidence found while investigating a crime.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Toxicology

Bachelor of Science in Toxicology is an undergraduate program of 3-years that studies the ways in which a chemical can affect living organisms. It also teaches students to identify the chemical or rather the poison and the treatment to it. It is that science that makes people aware of the harmful poisons affecting our everyday lives.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Food Science

Bachelor of Science in Food Science specifically deals with all the aspects related to food. It is a 3-year undergraduate program that includes everything a student should know about food, starting from slaughtering, gathering or butchering and consumption byways of cooking.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Nutrition

Bachelor of Science in Nutrition is an undergraduate program studied for 3-years. It is a course that is related to Nutrition and Dietetics course. This course focuses on the nourishment of the body and the necessary nutrients required to support life in the organisms.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Entomology

Bachelor of Science in Entomology is actually an Agriculture course. It is an undergraduate program for 3 years which studies the scientific study of insects and its related organisms. Its curriculum is divided into four specializations- professional/basic sciences, biology education, plant protection and urban pest management.

Bachelors of Science (B.Sc) Dietetics

Bachelor of Science in Dietetics is a 3-year undergraduate program that studies about food management, promotion of health through healthy food, and also focus on the relationship between food and body. As nourishment is primary to the body, it studies the importance of the body.
